Who is eligible to apply for the Murray Fellows?
All young adults (ages 21-30) in discernment for Christian ministry who are LGBTQ+ or questioning. Preference will be given to applicants from the Chicago area.
When is the application deadline?
Applications for the 2026-27 program year are due May 1, 2026.
How do I apply?
Applications will open in January 2026.
What counts as "ministry"?
Murray Fellows are young adults who are exploring a call to lay or ordained full-time ministry in the church, whether as pastors, musicians/worship leaders, chaplains, church planters, evangelists, missionaries, children's ministers, youth ministers, or something else we haven't thought of yet.
Should I apply if I'm in the "questioning" realm of "LGBTQ+ and questioning"?
Yes. The Murray Fellows program is a safe space for discernment, including discernment about gender and sexuality.
Should I apply if I'm in the midst of a faith transition or deconstruction?
Yes, if it would be valuable to discern your call in a community of Christians who may be asking the same questions.
Should I apply if I'm nowhere near the Chicago area?
Yes, although the program may be limited in its ability to reimburse travel expenses. Please reach out using our Contact form if you have questions about your specific circumstances.
Is there a fee to apply or participate?
A $100 deposit is required upon admission into the program to cover registration for the opening retreat. This deposit will be returned after participation in the retreat. There is no additional cost to participating in the Murray Fellows, thanks to the generosity of the Forum for Theological Exploration. Travel expenses for meetings and retreats will be reimbursed.
Is the program affiliated with a certain denomination?
No. The Murray Fellows program is funded by the ecumenical Forum for Theological Exploration and welcomes Christians of all denominational and non-denominational backgrounds.
Does the program have a statement of faith?
The Murray Fellows are an ecumenical ministry rooted in the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith, as expressed in the Apostles’ Creed.
Will I be expected to adhere to a certain set of beliefs about theology or human sexuality?
No. The Murray Fellows program recognizes the diversity of Christian beliefs around theology and sexuality. You will be asked only to treat those who have differing beliefs with respect and compassion.
Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to apply?
No. Applicants of all nationalities are welcome.
Do I have to be out to apply?
No. The Murray Fellows program welcomes those who may not feel safe sharing publicly about their sexual orientations or gender identities. Applicants' names and personal information will be kept strictly confidential. Those selected as Fellows will have the option to keep their participation confidential, as well.
